John Watson Nicol (born in Edinburgh on 12 January 1856) was a Scottish painter, the son of genre artist Erskine Nicol. After his mother’s death in 1863, the family moved to London, where Nicol trained under John Pettie and developed a polished style of historical genre painting, often with a humorous tone. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1876, the same year he married Charlotte Ellen Cope, daughter of Charles West Cope. Based largely in London, he exhibited widely in Britain and also worked in Scotland and France. His best-known painting, Lochaber No More (1883), reflects themes of Scottish emigration. Nicol lived and worked in Kensington for many years before retiring to Hampstead, where he died in 1926.
