John Henry Mole (1814-1886) - 19th Century Watercolour Coastal Landscape

Description

A very fine 19th century watercolour by the English artist John Henry Mole (1814-1886), who originally trained as a miniature artist. Mole has depicted an expansive coastal landscape on a blustery Autumn day. His detailed approach to the composition creates a successful and realistic portrayal of the English countryside. Mole was an associate of the New Society of Painters in Water-Colours (later the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours) in 1847. In the same year he abandoned miniatures to concentrate on landscapes and portraits of children. It's possible to date this landscape from the mid to late 19th century. Painted on wove laid to thick card. Signed.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing. With minor mount burn to the outer edge. Overall in good condition.

Artist Biography

Born in 1814, John Henry Mole was an artist from Alnwick, Northumberland, in the north of England. He initially worked as a solicitor's clerk in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, before pursuing a career in the arts. Although for much of his life he lived in London, his works primarily depicted Northumbria, the Lake District and Scotland. A number of his works are held in museums in London and the North of England.
