This fine watercolour study depicts a scene of mounted Cavalier stopping at a village inn. The rest of the men look ready to make haste, while the last two are left lingering for a second pint of ale and a look at the innkeeper's beautiful daughter. The watercolour is signed and dated to the lower left-hand corner. Well-presented in a wash-line mount and elegant gilt frame. On paper.Condition

Artist Biography
John Dawson Watson RWS (1832-1892) was a British painter, watercolourist, and illustrator. He was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Sedbergh School and Manchester School of Design. His son was the Impressionist painter Dawson Dawson-Watson. His daughter, Francis, married Myles Birket Foster in 1864.
Watson exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1853 to 1890, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists Suffolk Street, Royal Watercolour Society, and the Grosvenor Gallery. He was famous for his paintings of genre scenes.
