A very fine watercolour portrait of a seated family at a table with a green tablecloth, by the artist John Absolon (1815-1895). The figures are in typical Victorian period dress, with delicate use of colour and wash by the artist, in order to produce depth and character. With body colour. The inscribed label to the reverse reads 'Sunday Evening Illustration for the Vicar of Wakefield', a novel written by Oliver Goldsmith and published with illustrations by Absolon in 1855. Handsomely presented in a double card washline mount with gilt edge detail. Unsigned and inscribed. On wove.
Condition
In fine condition with a clean mount. Some very small spot marks to the upper right corner.

Artist Biography
John Absolon (1815-1895) was a British watercolourist, specialising in figure painting. He studied in London and then Paris. From 1839 he exhibited at the New Watercolour Society, of which he had become a member. He resigned from the society in 1858 to concentrate on oil painting, and showed several works at the Royal Academy, but returned to it in 1861.
