Description

An impressive nineteenth-century landscape after Johann Melchior Roos' (1663-1731) 'Cascade of Tivoli'. The painting depicts the dramatic Cascata dell'Aniene at Tivoli, where cascading waters plunge through the rocky gorge beneath a picturesque hill town. In the foreground, shepherds tend their livestock along the riverbank. Beyond, churches, towers, and rustic buildings tumble down the hillside, framed by distant mountains. The work is well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
