Description
A striking early 20th-century woodland landscape depicting a tranquil fir grove, painted in 1929. Tall, mature trees dominate the composition, their dark trunks and dense foliage creating a wonderful sense of depth, while glimpses of bright countryside beyond draw the eye through the woodland. The artist has used a rich and expressive palette of deep greens, blue-greens and earthy browns, enlivened by warmer touches across the forest floor and flashes of sunlight filtering through the trees. Bold, visible brushwork gives the painting a wonderfully immediate and painterly quality, capturing the shifting light and atmosphere of the woodland rather than simply recording its details. Signed. Inscribed and dated to the reverse. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Minor surface marks and abrasions. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Wear to the edges of the canvas/panel/board. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.
