James Ulric Walmsley (1860-1954) was a painter and photographer born in West Derby, Liverpool. A painter of genre and landscape pictures he originally trained as an architect in Ireland. He then worked on church decoration before undergoing art training, which included studying at the Stanhope Forbes School of Painting in Newlyn, Cornwall. He was a founder member of the Fylingdales Group and for the last 60 years of his life lived and worked in Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire. He finally realized his life's ambition at the age of 93 when his portrait titled 'Grannie', completed half a century earlier, was accepted by the Royal Academy in London in 1953. He was the father of writer Leo Walmsley. Ulric as he was known showed at the Goupil Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and the Royal Academy.
