A very fine, evocative landscape setting in oil completed in 1858, by well listed British artist James Trout Walton (1818-1867). The detailed and expansive composition shows a Swiss chalet set within a vivid blue lake scene, a miniature figure collecting water to the lower left of the foreground.
The artist has captured the Swiss landscape with a striking sense of realism and detail, casting subtle light on the surroundings. A variety of brushwork conveys both texture and detail; a spectacular and dramatic composition.
Well presented in a gilt slip. Signed additionally on the reverse.
Signed and dated. On canvas.There are a number of condition issues with this artwork; including heavy craquelure visible across the painting. Inspection under UV light shows areas of refilling and overpainting to the substantial areas of paint loss. There are also areas of blistering to the paint visible to the right edge. With surface scuffing, scratches and surface dirt visible to the slip.

Painter, born at Prenton, Liverpool. A naval architect and ship draughtsman by profession he studied at Birkenhead School of Art, 1889-92 and Liverpool School of Art, 1900. Burnett worked for a time at shipbuilders' Cammell Laird at Birkenhead and was a member of the Liver Sketching Club during the 1920’s and 1930’s. He exhibited many times at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and at the Royal Cambrian Academy. His work is in the collection of the Williamson Art Gallery,
