A figure looks down from the raised arch of a drawbridge to a barge below in this atmospheric work by Dutch artist Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller (1855-1925). Wijsmuller employs an Impressionistic style with an earthy palette. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt frame with a fluted cove and fine running patterns. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and craquelure. The canvas has been previously relined, and inspection under UV light reveals small areas of overpainting. The artwork is in good condition for its age overall.
