J. Walton - Framed Mid 19th Century Oil Country Woodland Scene

Description

A finely painted mid 19th century oil depicting two figures in a woodland landscape, with a cottage and chickens behind them. The painting is presented in an ornate gilt effect frame with palmette moulding. There is an indistinct signature to the lower right corner which appears more obviously under UV light. Signed indistinctly, On canvas.

Condition

There is scattered craquelure present. The canvas has been re-lined (possibly using the glue lining technique), causing the canvas texture to be reinforced into the surface of the paint. The paint layer is very stable. There are some losses to the frame moulding but these areas have been painted over in gold.
