A striking 19th-century scene depicting a mother and her child walking home after a day of collecting kindling. The child is barefoot as they walk along a muddy country path, passing a signpost suggesting they are on their way towards their village. Dominating mountains fill the background, whilst the sun sets in the distance. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame. Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some surface dirt and discolouration. There is heavy craquelure and the canvas appears to have been relined. Flakes of scattered paint loss. Marks and scuffs to the frame with some small losses.
