An exquisite late 19th century watercolour portrait by J. Parker. Here the artist has captured an elderly soldier with long white beard, wearing medieval armour. Through a delicate treatment of light, and subtle shading, the artist has produced a detailed figurative study, bringing this character to life. The attention to detail and intricate brushwork creates a lifelike realism, first mastered by Dutch Golden Age painters. Although we are uncertain of the sitters identity, it is clear he has had a long, and possibly hard life. Parker has used touches of white wax crayon to create a resist effect, emphasizing his ungroomed facial hair. Well presented in a painted wooden frame. Signed and dated. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some very minor discolouration. Overall the condition is very good. The frame appears to have been painted at a later date.
