Description

A fine watercolour portrait of Colonel John Leith-Ross (1845-1937) at the age of four by Edinburgh miniaturist painter George Marshall Mather (1800-1887). Leith-Ross is depicted wearing a blue dress. In the Victorian era, it was highly common for young boys to wear dresses until the age of six or seven. He later served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers regiment. Signed and dated to the lower left. Well presented in a maple frame and oval mount. On paper.

Condition

Overall, the condition is good for a picture of this age. There is some discolouration to the paper. There is a small tear to the paper on the boy's leg and a faint scratch by his neck. There is light wear to the frame.
