A solitary figure walks beside a ruined castle bathed in golden evening light in this paradisiacal landscape by German artist Hermann Schneider (1847-1918). The work is dated 1875, a year in which - according to a label affixed to the reverse of the frame - the artist spent time travelling in Italy. It seems likely, then, this work draws inspiration from the grand arcadian landscape paintings and picturesque views that he saw there. Signed and dated to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt frame with a white inner edge. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and craquelure. Areas of overpainting. Wear and scuffing to the frame, as well as a loss to the outer border on the left side. Despite this, the condition is good for a picture of this age and presents well.
