Fritz Hegenbart was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, etcher, and sculptor born on 15 September 1864 in Salzburg and died on 29 October 1943 in Bayerisch Gmain. The son of a cellist at the Prague Conservatory, he was initially trained as a musician before turning to the visual arts. From 1886 to 1887, Hegenbart studied sculpture at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts under Antonín Lhota, and from 1888 he studied painting, first in Munich and then at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, both times under Johann Frank Kirchbach. He spent time in Frankfurt am Main, Salzburg, Paris, and Dinkelsbühl before settling in Munich, where he opened a painting school. Between 1900 and 1902 he also taught costume drawing (painting after the clothed figure) and illustration at the Ladies' Academy of the Munich Women Artists' Association. From 1907 to 1910 he worked in Darmstadt, where he was responsible for the ornamental decoration and allegorical depictions in the Hochzeitsturm (Wedding Tower). He then returned to Munich and contributed as an illustrator to the magazines "Jugend" and "Fliegende Blätter." From 1902 to 1912 he was a member of the Hagenbund, and around the turn of the twentieth century his work was influenced by Jugendstil (Art Nouveau). Stylistically, Hegenbart mostly produced figurative compositions and animal depictions, and from around 1910 onwards turned to heroic and monumental group paintings. He worked primarily as an etcher, influenced by Max Klinger. His works are held in collections including the Albertina in Vienna, the Wien Museum, the Salzburg Museum (formerly the Carolino Augusteum), and the Städtisches Museum Magdeburg.
