A fine pastoral scene depicting a rustic thatched cottage nestled in a lush rural landscape, with a figure engaged in domestic work near the doorway. The composition draws the eye from the detailed foreground of the cottage and stream to the misty hills in the background, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere in this idyllic countryside setting. The fine brushwork is a very good example of Hobson's earlier work. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame and washline mount. Signed and dated to the lower edge. On paper.

Artist Biography

Henry Edrington Hobson was the son of the artist Henry Hobson of Bath, who was a topographical etcher. Hobson exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1857 and 1866. He married the portrait watercolourist Ada Vinson Hardy, with whom he had five children. Their children also became artists, one of whom, Mabel (1867–1943), painted miniatures and married the illustrator William Lee Hankey (1869–1952).
