Description

A charming rural scene with a heartwarming moment between mother and child. The early 19th Century watercolor shows a picturesque landscape with rolling hills, a harvested wheat field in the distance with stooks standing in a group. Birds wheel in the blue sky overhead as a mother and her young daughter cross a wide river using stepping stones. The mother carries a heavy basket of wheat on her back and looks behind her with a gentle smile to her child as she balances herself on a rock. The artist has beautiful captured the bond between mother and child with wonderful details and softness in the figures face and particularly feet. The painting is after the original watercolours by Joseph John Jenkins. This is a high quality copy, rendered with great skill. The painting is unsigned and presented in a fine early 20th Century gilt frame with foliate strap work, reeded outer edge and an internal gilt slip On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame has some small losses at the outer edges and corners and minor splitting at the lower right and upper left corners.

Artist Biography

Joseph Jenkins was born in London in 1811. He was the son of an engraver, who trained him as an engraver. He later abandoned engraving for watercolor painting, focusing on domestic subjects and landscapes.
In 1842, Jenkins was elected an associate of the New watercolours Society and became a member in 1843. He exhibited fifty-seven drawings at their exhibitions in Pall Mall. In 1847 he left, and joined the Old watercolours Society; he was elected an associate in 1849, and a fully member in 1850. He was its secretary for ten years, from 13 February 1854, and first introduced special private views of its exhibitions for members of the press. He also contributed to exhibitions, sending 271 drawings in all. Some of his drawings were engraved.
In 1884 Jenkins resigned his membership of the society, and died unmarried on 9 March 1885, at 67 Hamilton Terrace, St. John's Wood. He was buried on the western side of Highgate Cemetery.
A history of the Old Society of Painters in Water-colours, for which Jenkins had collected materials, was completed by John Lewis Roget in 1891.
