A rustic, aesthetically rich French Impressionist landscape in oil by the artist/art dealer Joseph Henry Dauberville (Joseph Bernheim-Jeune) (1907-1988). The scene shows a group of strikingly dark Cyprus trees standing tall in the foreground of this Tuscan landscape, with the distant hills and town fading into the hazy heat. The strong shape and dark form of the trees add excellent weight to the rest of the pastel coloured scene. The artist has signed to the lower right corner and the painting has been presented in a simple gilt effect frame.
We believe this painting to have been painted circa 1948, due to the existence of a second similar painting by the artist, with the same subject and style, framed identically, that is dated by the artist as 1948. On top of the wonderful decorative charm of this mid Century landscape, the artist himself has a rich and interesting history (see artist bio below).
On canvas.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are some areas of craqueleure to the surface and a slight dent to the canvas at the upper left quadrant. The frame has some areas of tarnishing and light scuffing.

Henry Dauberville (1907-1988) was the son of the renowned French gallery owner Josse Bernheim-Jeune (1870-1941). His grandfather opened the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in 1863, which is one of the oldest galleries in Paris, having hosted works by Matisse, Seurat, Cezanne, Vuillard, Modigliani and Renoir amongst many others. The Gallery was the first to hold an exhibition for the work of Van Gogh.
During his young life, Henry Dauberville was surrounded by some of the greatest talent of the era. As an infant, in 1910, he and his mother had their portrait painted by Pierre Auguste Renoir, which now resides in the Musée d'Orsay. Whilst Dauberville never too to painting full time, the influence of his youth surrounded by Barbizon School and the early Impressionists clearly shows in the few paintings that have been found by this artist.
