Artist Biography

Painter of mainly watercolours who was born in Romford, Essex. Bamford studied at Heatherley's School of Fine Art and at the Camden School of Art. In 1905 he took a teaching post at Chelmsford School of Art and Design and in 1907 became the Art Master at the Chelmsford School for Girls until his retirement in 1927. A prolific exhibitor he showed the Dudley Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, RA, RBA, RHA, RI and ROI. Alfred Bamford is best remembered for a large collection of sketches of Essex, including many of East Ham, Ilford, Barking, Dagenham and Romford many of which are housed in Chelmsford Museum and Art Gallery.
