Description

This autumnal forest scene by the artist Henri Vincent-Anglade (1876-1956) depicts thin trees with leaves of orange and red reflected in a crystal clear lake. Signed and dated to the lower right. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Light abrasions and surface debris throughout. Wear to the edges of the canvas, resulting in a loss to the upper right corner. The artwork has undergone previous restoration work, including a small tear repair to the lower margin.

Collection Information

Provenance: purchased directly from the artist’s studio sale. These works remained undisturbed in his historic Montmartre-aux-artistes studio, where he lived and created from 1933 onward. The collection has been brought back into the public eye through the efforts of his two granddaughters, who are devoted to preserving and sharing their grandfather’s legacy.

Artist Biography

Henri Vincent-Anglade was born in 1876 in Bordeaux, France. He added his mother's patronymic to his father's to distinguish himself from his brother, the poster designer René Vincent. Vincent-Anglade was a pupil of Gustave Moreau, Fernand Corom and Francois Flameng at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and also Amable Pinta. Early in his career, he became a fashionable portrait painter, mainly of intimate paintings of women. He exhibited in Paris and regularly appeared in exhibitions, especially the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded a distinction in 1903. He was a regular at greyhound and horse races, and was also valued as an animal painter.
