Crivet - 1847 Dutch School Oil Donkey At Sundown
Description
A fine example of a Dutch School landscape in oil. A donkey with a load bearing saddle stands on a rocky outcrop by a path with two horned goats lying at his feet. A woman can be seen making her way up the rocky path with a basket on her head and bare feet. The sun is setting in the left side of the painting casting a yellow glow over the clouds and landscape. The artist has rendered the animals in beautiful detail, capturing great character and atmosphere. The soft lighting gives the painting an overall sense of calm and serenity.
The artist has signed "Crivet" to the lower edge and dated 1847. The painting is presented in a very fine late 19th Century gilt frame with highly ornate, swept corners, a sanded cove and floral strap work.
On wooden panel.Condition
The painting has areas of craquelure. There are five horizontal cracks running down the painting in the centre from the top that stop halfway down (likely from the wood panel warping over time). The frame has had considerable amounts of restoration. The two lower corners have been heavily rebuilt as well as several areas in the upper two corners. There are some areas of loss of texture in the sanded cove, this being said, the restoration is effective.
