This charming scene depicts two shire horse hauling timer across a shallow creek. A man guides the heavy set horses into the water, gently encouraging them with the reins. The artist captures charming details within the scene such as the small cottage in the distance and the way the water splashes in the horses hooves. Signed to the lower left. Presented in an ornate gilt frame with acanthus leaf On canvas.

Artist Biography

Harden Sidney Melville was a painter and illustrator who was born in London. He is best known for conducting the first official hydrographic survey of the north-east coast of Australia in 1842–1846 on board the H.M.S Fly. He had three paintings hung in the Royal Academy’s show between 1837 and 1841.
