Description
A striking late 18th-century portrait of a Dutch clergyman, depicted in a black tricorn hat, a dark brown coat, and a simple white cravat, with his hair curled and powdered at the sides. A provenance label on the reverse of the stretcher reads "Abraham de Haan, husband of..." Unfortunately, the full inscription cannot be deciphered; however, it is quite possible that this identifies the sitter. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age including fine craquelure throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous overpainting as well as several canvas repairs visible to the reverse. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
