Artist Biography
Guy Roddon was a painter, born in London who studied at Goldsmiths' College, 1937-39 under Clive Gardiner and at the Byam Shaw School of Art 1939-40 under Ernest Jackson. In 1940 fresh out of art school, he was drafted into the Camouflage Unit where his peers were to include William Coldstream, Oliver Messel and Claude Rogers. In the 1960’s he lived a nomadic existence travelling and working across France for many years. He was invited to join a group of painters, La Realite Seconde (this group included Henri Hayden and Claude Venard) showing in the Musée de l'art Modèrne. It was they who attempted a reconciliation between the abstract and the representational elements in art.
His solo exhibitions included, Gallerie Apollinarie, Institute Français, London, David Paul Gallery, Chichester, Stables Gallery, Hastings, Christopher Hull Gallery, The Parkin Gallery, and the Ibis Gallery, London. His group shows included the Leicester Galleries, Redfern Gallery, Upper Grosvenor Galleries, New Grafton Gallery, Wildenstein's, the London Group, Royal Academy, Contemporary Portrait Society, Musée de l'Art Modèrne and the Pace Galleries Houston, Texas. Roddon's work is in many public and private collections which include, Lambeth Palace, an official portrait of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsey and the National Portrait Gallery. Guy Roddon taught at Goldsmiths' College and at Brighton Polytechnic and was a long-standing member of the Chelsea Arts Club.
