Description

A striking pastoral landscape by Swiss artist Gustav Adolf Thomann (1874-1961), depicting two Holstein bulls grazing at high altitude, their black and white coats contrasting beautifully against the soft green of the surrounding alpine meadow. The painting has been well presented in a large gilt effect frame and internal slip, complete with delicate running patterns and floral ornamentation to the profile. Fixed to the reverse of the painting are several biographical labels and a gallery label. (Provenance: Gallery Koller, Zurich from a private collection acquired in 2001). Signed and dated 1890. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. There is some craquelure to the surface of the painting. Inspection under UV light reveals minor retouching to the surface of the oil. The gilt effect frame shows signs of age-related wear. Stable cracks and small chips visible on all sides of the frame. Small moulding repairs and retouching noted on all rails. The overall condition of the artwork and frame is very good.
