Painter of landscape and architectural subjects, also a pottery designer and calligrapher born in Fraserburgh, Scotland. He studied at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen 1897-1901 and Royal College of Art where he received his diploma in 1903. In 1902 he had visited Italy on a travelling design scholarship and the following year moved to Stoke-on-Trent to take up an appointment as art director of Minton, Hollins & Co., a post he held until 1906 when he became art director of Pilkington’s Tile & Pottery Co. in Manchester and was also Head of Burslem School of Art. He is best known for his work for the Pilkington Tile and Pottery Company and he also painted watercolours of landscapes on ceramics which he usually signed with a monogram 'GMF'. He was an adviser to the British Pottery Manufacturers Federation and the principal of Stoke School of Art 1913-1940.
