Collection Information
Whilst very little is known about William Henry Ladd, he was born c.1892 and studied at the South Kensington School of Art, which later became the Royal College of Art, and where several in this collection were submitted as final exam pieces. Capturing the spirit of Edwardian England, Ladd's portraits are particularly accomplished, reminiscent of the Slade School artists at the turn of the century, in particular the work of Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) and the drawings and etched portraits of William Strang (1859-1921). His illustrative design work is also clearly influenced by the leading textile designers of the period, including Lewis Day, Walter Crane and William Morris, with a particular focus on floral and botanical motifs bridging the Arts and Crafts movement with the Art Nouveau. Whilst many works are signed by Ladd, all are by his hand and were acquired as a single portfolio.
