Description

A fine and unusually well-documented portrait of an elderly lady, painted in 1835 and inscribed to the reverse with a remarkable degree of biographical detail. According to the inscription, the sitter is Anna Margaretha Brenning, née Ebel, born 9 December 1762, married 30 October 1787, and painted in her seventy-third year on 18 December 1835, a specificity that gives the work a rare historical intimacy. She is depicted half-length against a dark ground, dressed in a red-brown doublet with full sleeves and an elaborate muslin bonnet trimmed with fine hand embroidery, dress entirely characteristic of Biedermeier fashion at its most refined. Her hands are folded quietly before her, a gold ring just visible, and her gaze is direct and composed, conveying the quiet dignity of a long life well lived. The painting itself is of considerable quality, sensitively handled, with careful attention to the textures of lace, muslin and fabric. A fragmentary shipping label on the reverse references Hannover, suggesting a North German origin. Unsigned, but the hand is accomplished and assured. Presented in a fine gilt frame. A portrait of real character, historical interest, and technical accomplishment. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

There are several small canvas tear repairs scattered to the edges and lower margins of the canvas. These have been completed to a high standard. There is some craquelure to the surface. Signs of wear are consistent with age. There are some minor marks and small losses to the frame. Overall, the work is in very good condition.
