Description

A striking 19th-century portrait of a Flemish official in formal attire, distinguished by a sash delicately embroidered with the inscription “Maetschappy Staef van Vlaender” (“Society Staff of Flanders”). He is depicted gesturing toward an open book, emphasizing the importance of knowledge and civic duty. His direct gaze engages the viewer, lending the portrait an immediate and compelling presence. The artist renders the figure with refined, precise brushwork - characteristic of academic portraiture of the period - capturing subtle textures in the fabric of his clothing and the dignified composure of his expression. Unsigned. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.
