Maximilian I (1573-1651) was the Duke of Bavaria from 1597 and Elector from 1623. A devout Catholic, he was one of the leading proponents of the Counter-Reformation during the Thirty Years’ War. He is depicted here in miniature, dressed in a suit of armour. Beautifully presented in an antique gilt frame. Inscribed verso. Unsigned. On card.
