Description

A finely painted nineteenth-century portrait of a gentleman smartly dressed in a striped waistcoat, white cravat, and black jacket. A handwritten German label affixed to the reverse identifies the sitter as Daniel Andreas Arnold (1778-1840), a master baker from Nuremberg. The label is signed by Eugen Arnold, Daniel and Katharina's great-grandson. The work is beautifully presented in a gilt frame adorned with ornate floral motifs. Unsigned. On canvas laid to board.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration, areas of blanching, and craquelure. The canvas has been laid to board, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. There is wear to the frame, including scuffs and stable cracking. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
