Description

A fine portrait of a young gentleman, depicted wearing a dark cloak and hat with a white ruff collar. An inscription to the reverse of the canvas identifies the sitter as Wolf Adam von Hirschberg, a member of the noble Hirschberg family of Ziegenburg, Bavaria. The upper left bears the family's heraldic arms, comprising a white (argent) shield with a red (gules) stag rampant, surmounted by a crown. The portrait is well presented in a black frame with a gilt slip. Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration, craquelure, and some marks and abrasions to the surface. Faint impressions from the stretchers. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
