Description
A cobbler's apprentice labours in a cluttered workshop while his master reads a newspaper and smokes a pipe in this charming genre scene. The work is unsigned; however, a label affixed to the reverse attributes the work to Belgian painter Gérard Jozef Portielje (1856–1929). Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure throughout. The canvas has been relined, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
