Description

An accomplished portrait of a young woman, her face turned towards the light. Signed to the upper right. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration, surface dirt, and craquelure. The artwork has undergone some previous restoration, including a canvas tear repair and overpainting. Scuffs and wear to the frame, as well as some repainting to the right-hand side.

Artist Biography

Heinrich ("Heinz") Kroh (1881-1972) was a German draughtsman, etcher, and painter. After finishing school, he apprenticed as a locksmith before training as a technical draughtsman. Kroh was a self-taught artist in drawing and painting. In 1904, he received a scholarship to attend the Dusseldorf Art Academy.
