A woman peacefully reads a book in a verdant park in this intimate portrait by French artist Georges Joubin (1888-1983). Joubin painted numerous scenes of women reading, evidently finding inspiration in the sense of peacefulness and introspection that this subject matter provides. Signed to the lower right. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Wear and dirtying around the edges of the board. Areas of craquelure, resulting in some small losses to the paint.

Artist Biography

Alfred Flavien Georges Joubin (1888-1983) was a French painter. Having been orphaned at a young age, he received his artistic training at the Académie Julian and then at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. In 1912, he settled in the artists' colony "Les Fusains" in Montmartre, Paris. He participated in the founding of the École de Montmartre, whose manifesto proclaimed: "we believe we can create a work not nourished by abstraction, but plunging into the very roots of life." A street in Digny, his birthplace, now bears his name.
