Artist Biography

George Butler (1904-1999) was a painter born in Sheffield. After spending two years at Sheffield College of Art from 1922-23, he attended the Central School of Arts & Crafts in London from 1923-26. He joined the London office of advertising company Walter J. Thompson, becoming its first English Director in the early 1930s. He also became a member of the Dover Street Arts Club in 1935. He worked for Thompson's extensively in Germany and America a decade before World War II whilst continuing to paint. He exhibited at the New English Art Club, Royal Society of British Artists, and Royal Watercolour Society, of all of which he became an elected member. He was also a member of the Sheffield Society of Artists and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Between 1960-80 Butler lived partly in Provence, France, building a house there. He was noted for sensitive portrayals of young girls, often ballerinas, and the English and French landscape.
