Description

A fine original charcoal drawing with watercolour wash and pen and ink lettering, by the well-known illustrator George Frederick Arthur Belcher RA (1875-1947). Belcher has a clear proficiency in the style and medium, producing a handsomely composed figure illustration of 'Mr Thomas Marlowe'. Signed in ink to the lower right corner, as shown. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some surface discolouration and light foxing. There is a water stain to the lower edge, and surface dirt along the left edge of the page, as shown.

Artist Biography

George Frederick Arthur Belcher RA (1875-1947) was an illustrator, painter and etcher born in London. He studied at Gloucester School of Art and from 1911 he contributed to Punch as a humorous draughtsman. In 1931 he was elected an Associate of the RA and in 1945 a full member, the first humorous artist for 177 years. After he retired as an illustrator he began painting still lifes and flower studies in oils. He illustrative work was also reproduced in Tatler, Graphic and Vanity Fair. Belcher also showed at the Fine Art Society and Leicester Galleries, where his shows such as London Types and Characters and London Life and Character before World War I were very successful. His work is in the collections of the art galleries of New South Wales, Sydney, the V&A, Tate Gallery and the British Museum.
