Description

This is a wonderful early 19th century copy after Gilles-Antoine Demarteau’s 1787 engraving of Neptune, itself derived from Raphael’s fresco The Council of the Gods. Executed as a very fine charcoal study, the work is likely an academic exercise produced by a student. The lower edge bears a French inscription reading: “Souvenir de P. Barns … l’académie, 1830.” On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some minor foxing. Creasing and small tears to the outer edges of the paper.

Size

48 x 35cm (18.9" x 13.8")
