Description

An idyllic nineteenth-century rural scene in which two travellers cross a wooden bridge towards a church beyond. Painted during a period of rapid change and industrialisation, pastoral scenes such as this present a timeless Romantic vision of rural life. The church underscores the artist's Romantic conception of English countryside life as morally virtuous, whilst imbuing the composition with a sense of permanence. Signed 'Frith' to the lower left. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The artwork has undergone restorative work, including several canvas tear repairs and areas of overpainting. Discolouration and craquelure to the surface. Some losses and wear around the edges.
