I. D. Hill - Late 19th Century Oil The Hay Harvest
Description
A beautiful Victorian oil landscape depicting late Summer afternoon in a hay field. A group of figures work at harvesting the hay into stooks. A woman rests in the shade to the right with a dog and a man and woman pause from their work to exchange conversation. The artist has wonderfully captured the hazy golden glow of the romanticised view of countryside workers, prevalent during the late Victorian era.
The artist has signed to the lower right corner and the painting has been presented in its original handsome, gilt, gesso frame with botanical strap work and gilt slip.
On board.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craquelure. There is slight outward bowing to the board but this is not noticeable when view front on. The frame has had several areas of restoration but is in generally fine condition.
