Bartram Hiles lost both arms in a tram accident during his childhood and learnt to write and draw by holding his utensils in his mouth. He studied at Bristol School of Art and won a scholarship to South Kensington, before studying at the Royal Society of British Art in 1893 and later the Royal Institute of Paintings in Watercolours and the Royal Academy.
