Description

A fine 19th Century coastal watercolour showing waves crashing onto the sandy shore of Ventnor beach on the Isle of Wight. A town can be seen in the distance, delicately picked out in graphite and gouache. The artist has inscribed the location to the lower left corner and the painting has been presented in a gilt frame with wash line mount. There is a label at the reverse of the frame with details of the painting's provenance: "Provenance: Sally Clarke, nee Sant, the artist's widow; Fanny Sant, sister of Sally; W. Compton-Smith, 1907."

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration. There is some scuffing and chipping to the gilt of the frame.
