An exquisite mid 19th Century watercolour coastal scene by the skilled Danish painter, Peter Peterson Toft. The landscape is the impressive coastline of the island of Sark, one of the Channel islands of the United Kingdom. The artist has wonderfully captured the majesty of the Channel coastline with a delicacy of light and shade and a restrained use of colour. The artist has signed and inscribed to the lower left. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a loss at the lower right edge.

Artist Biography

Peter Peterson Toft, born 1825 in Kolding, Denmark. Renowned as a watercolourist of landscapes with a talent for Orientalism.

Peter Toft arrived in San Francisco in 1850 by ship. He made many painting excursions into Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

Toft is a listed artist in Benezit and Artists in California by P & H Samuels.
