An impressive portrait after the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals (1580–1666). The original is held in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and is thought to depict his fellow painter and possible student Jan Miense Molenaer (1610–1668). Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Some small losses to the paint. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, stable cracking, and small losses.
