Description

In this nude study, Josse has used created a distinct contrast between the cold blue background and the warm colours used on the model's body. The red tints to the hands, feet and face create a flushed look by using red chalk, charcoal and graphite to emphasise the features. Signed to the lower right. On wove.

Condition

Even discolouration. Some creasing to the lower left. Holes along the top edge from the artist's original sketchbook.

Artist Biography

Born in Nantes, France in 1910, Francois Xavier Josse was a French painter and sculptor who specialised in life drawings of nude female models.

He studied at Beaux-Arts in Nantes before moving to Paris to further his studies at the Academies of the Grand-Chaumière and the Colarossi Academy in 1930. A retrospective of his work was organised in Paris in 1989.
