Artist Biography
Jacob Dooijewaard (1876-1969) was a painter born and trained in Amsterdam. His formal training began at the Quellinus School, followed by the Rijksnormaalschool voor Tekenonderwijs. Afterwards he taught art at the Amsterdam Arts and Crafts School for five years. It was during this period that he came into contact with the Amsterdam Impressionists, particularly George Hendrik Breitner and Willem Arnold Witsen, whose rugged and broad brushwork left their mark, inspiring Dooijewaard to paint the streets of his hometown. A trip to Paris for six months exposed him to both classical and contemporary art, which helped broaden his horizons. Upon returning, his painting evolved into a quest for the perfect balance between spontaneous impressionism and meticulous realism. In the 1902 exhibition of Arti et Amicitae he was awarded the Willink van Collem award for his three entries, and at another of their exhibitions the gold medal by Queen Wilhelmina. Doojiewaard moved to the rural area of Gooi, where he joined a circle of artists known as the Laren group. In 1919 a close friendship developed between the painter and the American art collectors William and Anna Singer, who had settled in Laren in 1901. Ultimately the Singers’ support changed the course of Dooijewaard’s career and assured his success. The artist was made an Officer of the Order of Orange Nassau, and on his eighty-fifth birthday Olaf V, King of Norway, bestowed upon him the Order of St. Olaf in appreciation of his artistic achievements. Dooijewaard's work can be found in the museums of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Barcelona, The Hague, Portland, Maine, and Rotterdam.
