Reclining back onto an elbow with her legs crossed over, Josse depicts this female model in a relaxed pose. The use of watercolour with ink, pastel and charcoal creates bold lines and adds depth to the model's features.

Signed and dated to the lower right.

Even discolouration. Holes to the top edge from the artists' original sketchbook.

Artist Biography

Born in Nantes, France in 1910, Francois Xavier Josse was a French painter and sculptor who specialised in life drawings of nude female models.

He studied at Beaux-Arts in Nantes before moving to Paris to further his studies at the Academies of the Grand-Chaumière and the Colarossi Academy in 1930. A retrospective of his work was organised in Paris in 1989.
