Artist Biography
Guy Cowell was born in Oakland California. He studied at California College of Arts and Crafts for two years before leaving to travel the world and work.
Cowell was sentenced to two years in federal prison for draft refusal and his time their greatly influenced his underground comic series 'Inner City Romance'.
He worked as an illustrator for The Good Times newspaper before the paper ceased publication in the 1980's. He then went on to conduct work for Rip Off Press, where he created the comic book series 'Doll'. He took 18 months off from Rip Off Press to join the fight against global nuclear weapons with The Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament creating maps for marches and biographical drawings of activists.
On his return to Rip Off Press his work became more focused on nature, inspired by backpacking trips to parts of Europe and Africa.
Cowell's works can be seen at the Crocker Art Museum in California and the Pritikin Museum in San Francisco.
