Description

A dramatic Scottish Highland scene by the well-listed British artist, Francis E. Jamieson (1895-1950). As the clouds drift through the mountain peaks, Jamieson captures light and shade as it falls on the water and rocks. Signed with the artist's pseudonym 'A. Lewis' and dated 1912 to the lower right. The oil has been well presented in a heavy gilt frame with palmettes to the cove and laurel and berry moldings to the outer profile. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discoloration and light dirtiness to the surface of the oil. There is some craquelure in the paint layer. Signs of wear to the heavy gilt frame include small chips, stable cracking, and molding repairs.

Artist Biography

Francis E. Jamieson (1895-1950) was commonly known for his Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. The artist often signed with pseudonyms such as 'Phil Hips', 'Graham Williams', 'W. Richards', and 'Arnold Pienne' in order to reach a wider audience, while also selling his work ‘door to door’. Jamieson’s work was often in a traditional Victorian style, and his pictures were reproduced as postcards by Ajelli and Co of London in the 1920s.
