This atmospheric 19th-century landscape captures a serene sunset over a winding river valley, with warm golden tones suffusing the sky and reflecting upon the water below. The composition leads the viewer's eye through undulating hills that frame the meandering waterway, whilst the soft brushwork creates a contemplative mood typical of romantic landscape painting. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Discolouration to the varnish. Craquelure and abrasions throughout. Some wear to the edges of the canvas resulting in minor losses. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Overall the artwork remains in good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, fine cracking and small losses. The frame has undergone previous restoration and has been touched in with gold paint.
